Since its inception in 1958, the Manual of Oregon Trees and Shrubs has been a standard for educating college and university students about trees and shrubs that occupy Pacific Northwest forests.  It includes woody plants ranging from Alaska to northern California and from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountains. While focusing on forest species, it includes a number of prominent rangeland species that associate with forests.

Now in its 11th edition, the Manual features: 1) simple-to-use and well-tested identification keys for both conifers and broadleaves, 2) detailed descriptions for approximately 75 genera and 150 species of trees and shrubs, including identifying characteristics, habitat and range, and common current and traditional uses, 3) simple line drawings that reinforce key characteristics, 4) an illustrated glossary of common terms used to describe woody plants, and 5) a variety of additional study aides  The Manual can be used in the classroom as a textbook, or in the field as an identification manual.  It has a spiral binding that allows it to open completely and fold back on itself, and it is small enough to fit inside a cruiser’s vest, jacket pocket, or backpack.  Both covers are water-resistant, although the inner pages are not.

Primary audiences: college and university students in forestry and related natural resource fields, and practicing foresters and natural resources professionals.

Secondary audiences: high school students in forestry and field biology classes, and serious adult naturalists interested in Northwest forests.
